PHP runs about 74% of all websites with a known server-side language (according to W3Techs) - including Wikipedia and every WordPress site. In 25+ years as a PHP developer I've watched the language grow from version 3 to PHP 8.5. I didn't choose it out of habit: no other language offers the same mix of development speed, a rich ecosystem and cheap hosting.
What does a PHP developer do?
A PHP developer builds everything that happens on the server side - what the user doesn't see but feels with every click. That includes business logic, database connections, APIs, user authentication, payment processing, sending emails and integrations with external systems.
| Area | PHP usage | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Content sites | Very common | WordPress, Drupal, Joomla |
| Online stores | Very common | WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop |
| Management systems | Common | CRM, ERP, internal admin interfaces |
| APIs and microservices | Common | Laravel API, Lumen, Slim |
| Automation | Moderate | Cron jobs, webhooks, scrapers |
PHP and WordPress - advanced development, not just themes
WordPress is written in PHP. But there's a big difference between installing a theme and developing for WordPress. A professional PHP developer does things a page builder can't:
Custom content types - products, real estate listings, doctors, courses, lawyers - anything the standard WordPress taxonomy doesn't cover. This is pure PHP in functions.php with register_post_type() and register_taxonomy().
The most powerful mechanism in WordPress. With add_action() and add_filter() you can change any behavior of the system without touching core. That's how I build integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot, ERP systems and SMS without changing the base code.
WordPress can serve as a headless CMS - a full backend with a REST API. React, Vue or Next.js on the client, WordPress on the server. This is the architecture I build for sites that need high performance and frequent updates.
WooCommerce is PHP at its core. Custom payment methods (Stripe, PayPal), calculated shipping methods, integration with ERP and WMS systems, subscription logic - all of these need deep PHP, not a page builder.
WordPress is a frequent target for hacks. With a background in penetration testing, I implement protection against SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, file upload vulnerabilities and remote code execution - at the code level, not only with security plugins.
Laravel - the leading PHP framework for advanced development
Laravel is the leading PHP framework in 2026 - the most popular in its category on GitHub. I've worked with Laravel from version 4 to 12; read more about my Laravel developer services and custom system development. What sets it apart:
| Laravel feature | What it gives the business |
|---|---|
| Eloquent ORM | Readable, safe work with the database - no SQL injection |
| Artisan CLI | Automated tasks, backups and migrations - hours of work saved |
| Queues and jobs | Background processing - emails, image processing, API calls - without blocking the user |
| Sanctum / Passport | Full authentication for SPAs and mobile APIs - production-ready |
| Testing | Built-in PHPUnit and feature tests - code is tested before it goes live |
| Livewire | A dynamic interface without complex JavaScript - fast to build, easy to maintain |
At BuyMe I built a microservices system on Laravel that handles 10,000+ transactions a day. Choosing Laravel saved months of development compared with PHP without a framework - and made onboarding new developers fast.
PHP 8.x - why upgrade now
PHP 8.x is significantly faster than PHP 7.2 - up to 2x in benchmarks, less in real applications, with the biggest gains in compute-heavy work. Same code, same server, a different speed. Businesses still on PHP 7.x pay more for servers and get less performance.
The upgrade needs testing, but the return comes quickly. How it's done on a live site, without downtime, is described on the website upgrade page.
| PHP version | Status | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| PHP 5.x | Dangerous - EOL | Upgrade now - known security holes |
| PHP 7.4 | EOL since 2022 | Upgrade - no security patches |
| PHP 8.0 / 8.1 | EOL | Upgrade - no security patches |
| PHP 8.2 / 8.3 | Security only | Works, but move to 8.4 or later |
| PHP 8.4 / 8.5 | Current ✓ | Recommended - the fastest and safest |
5 common reasons to hire a PHP developer instead of trying it yourself
- The plugin "almost does" what you need
Every business reaches the point where Elementor and plugins aren't enough. It needs custom logic - an API connection, complex price calculations, a unique admin interface. This is where a PHP developer comes in.
- The site was hacked
Recovery after a hack, malware clean-up and hardening the site again all need deep PHP knowledge. A security plugin alone isn't enough after a hack.
- Intermittent PHP errors and 500 responses
PHP errors in production freeze the site. Debugging them takes an understanding of the error log, stack traces and the server environment.
- The site is slow - even after caching
Query optimization, N+1 problems, object caching, OPcache - these are PHP problems that only an experienced developer will spot and fix. A cache only hides the problem.
- A version upgrade broke everything
Upgrading from PHP 7.4 to 8.x breaks old code - deprecated functions, type errors, changed behavior. A safe migration needs thorough testing and code fixes.
I contacted Vadim for help with setting up a specific plugin on our site. Vadim took care of it with dedication, professionalism and speed, answered every one of our calls and was fully committed to it. Of course we will use Vadim's services in the future too. Thank you very much!
PHP developer: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a PHP developer and someone who builds WordPress sites with page builders?
A page-builder freelancer works with a visual interface - Elementor, themes and plugins. A PHP developer writes code - builds functions, APIs and mechanisms that do not exist on the market. A PHP developer can do everything a page-builder freelancer does, but not the other way around.
What is the hourly rate of a PHP developer?
For reference, these are Israeli market ranges in 2026, converted to US dollars: a junior developer or freelancer $40-70/hour, an experienced developer (5-10 years) $70-120/hour, a senior developer (10+ years) $110-190/hour, and a development company $170-330/hour including overhead. A senior freelancer working directly, without middlemen, gives the best value for the money.
Laravel or WordPress - which one fits my project?
It depends on the complexity. Content, a blog or an online store → WordPress with WooCommerce. A management system, CRM, SaaS or API → Laravel. A portal with content and complex logic → WordPress with a separate Laravel API. A fast MVP for launch → Laravel, for its clean structure and fast deployment.
How long does it take to build a PHP system from scratch?
It depends entirely on scope: a landing page with a PHP backend takes 1-2 weeks, a business website on WordPress 3-4 weeks, a complex WooCommerce store 6-14 weeks, a custom CRM or admin system on Laravel 2-3 months, and a SaaS platform 6-18 months.
Is PHP still relevant in 2026?
More than ever. PHP 8 brought the JIT compiler (8.0), readonly properties and Fibers (8.1), typed class constants (8.3), and property hooks with asymmetric visibility (8.4) - better performance in compute-heavy work, lightweight concurrency, safer code and less boilerplate. Around it sit Laravel, Symfony and a rich ecosystem.
What is the difference between PHP and Node.js or Python?
PHP was built for the web from day one, with cheap and widely available hosting, a huge ecosystem (WordPress, Laravel) and easy deployment. Node.js is excellent for real-time work such as chat and sockets, with JavaScript on both sides. Python is strong in AI/ML, data science and scripting, and is less common for classic web hosting (Django and FastAPI exist, but the hosting ecosystem is PHP's). For most business projects, PHP is the pragmatic choice.
